London, August 13. Seventeen-year-old Miss Betty Slade, of Ilford, who stands 41 ft. 6 ins, the smallest competitor in the field, gave Britain its first title in the European Swimming Championships at the Empire Pool, Wembley, last night.' Miss Slade won the Women's Spring-mmm........................ board Diving Championship with 103.60 points, after it had seemed in the early part of the competition that she had missed her chances.
Her last two voluntary dives were brilliantly executed, and at the end she was carried shoulder high by admirers round the bath| side. Miss Slade is the English champion, and she has trained hard for many weeks for this event.
Another British girl to do well, was Miss Edna Child, who took third position,
Norman Wainwright (Hanley), English champion, made a des- perate bid for the men's 400 metres free-style title, but he was beaten into, third place. The final was won by B. Borg (Swed- en), in the new championship time of 4 mins. 51.6 secs, Werner Plath (Germany) ond. Wainwright's time mins. 56.3 secs.

M. H. Taylor, of Sheffield, carri- ed British colours into the final of the men's 100 metres back stroke event during the early session. He finished second to H. Schlauch, in the first semi-final heat, the German putting up a new championship re- cord time of 1 minute 9.4 seconds. Britain's other representative, M. failed to Y: Ffrench-Williams, gain a place in the final, which will be decided to-day.

Miss Pam Barton will not be available for the British Curtis Cup team which goes to America next month. Miss Barton has sacrificed her place in order to attend the wedding of her sister, Miss Mervyn Barton, to Mr. R.. Sutherland Pilch.
Miss Pam Barton won both the titles in British and American 1936.
Mrs. Garon is also unable to make the trip. Miss Nan Baird and Miss Phyllis Wade (Ferndown) will fill the vacancies..
