Straws Are In
Straws in the wind! This sum- mer is going to be straw seasons in millinery, which trend is one of the many style facets that reflect the 90-s, when to wear, felt in winter and straw in summer was a fas-
hion axiom.
Of course the tradition has not been taken over bodily. The tailor- ed casual hats of felt are more than usually attractive in shape, draping and pastel tones and off-shades. Then there are such fads and fan- cies as turbans of silk jersey, and chiffon jersey, often in' Roman stripes, and of India silk and strip- ed or ombre crepes. Some of them wear scarfs that twist around the neck and shoulders, and others are sold with matching detached scarfs. Satin, suede and leather also poke their faces into the pic- ture, sometimes forming entire hats but more often satisfied to crown a straw brim or a visor.

CROWNS SUPPRESSED
Although the off-the-face silhou- ette has survived and wears great halo or shovel brims, the new sil- houette is flat arid worn tilted over one eye. Crowns are either sup- pressed or less often-exaggerat- ed. When exaggerated they tower to incredible heights on "flower pots," pokes and sombreros; when suppressed it is done in such amaz- ing ways that it leaves a sense of their presence and one thinks a great deal about them! Absent from the disc, laid low under the salad- bowl brim, flat and ineffectual on the sailor, also shallow on the Wat- teau, rising not us structure but as decoration, diminutive and pyra- midal, from the top-centre of the bumper-edged saucer, or the mush- room, or behind the upward and forward thrust of the boat brim, they are important whether grotes qued, absent or diminished! More- over, their normal position is very frequently stressed by the posi- tion of the trimming.
