SURPRISE RAIDS ON CHUNGKING BOOKSHOPS Communist Literature Apparently Confiscated
Extremists
Becoming Much Too Blatant
Chungking, To-day.
A large party of city gendarmes, headed by a young officer, raided bookshops all over Chungking yesterday.
Guards were posted outside the shops, while others ransacked the shops, securing large hauls of new Chinese books which they carried off in baskets.
Police headquarters decline to comment on the raid, stating the action was taken "under higher authority."
Subsequent enquiries revealed that the confiscated literature con- sisted of Communist publications.
It is generally understood the raids form part of the policy of suppression of "extremist” · pub- lications, and those containing criticisms of the Chinese Govern- ment policy.
