MILESTONE IN STORY OF PRESENT PARIS PARLIAMENT Popular Front Thrown Overboard: Right Turn Inner Council To Be Virtually Dictatorship
Paris, To-day.
The new Daladier Government in several respects signifies a milestone in the history of the pre- sent French Parliament, hitherto characterised by a succession of Popular Front Cabinets. After two years of disappointment, the Radical So- cialist Party, without much talking but with no less determination, has abandoned the Popular Front and seems willing to resume the role of mediator between capital and labour.
As far as can be seen, the programme of the new Government will turn the steering wheel con- siderably to the Right.
The great novelty is the forma- tion of a "small council" consist- ing of the six most important Ministers, M. Edouard Daladier,
*M. Camille Chautemps, M. Panl Reynaud, M. Paul Marchandeau, ML Georges Bonnet and M. Albert Sarrant.
These six men will be the direc- torate actually ruling the country and deciding upon guiding the lines of domestic and foreign policy.
Next task of the new Cabinet will be realisation of the armament programme by military, financial and social measures.
STRIKE PROBLEM Political circles believe that the strike problem will be the first, and possibly the hardest, task of the Cabinet.
The opinion is expressed that if the Premier succeeds in settling the present conflict, an important step will have been made on the way to restoration of confidence, and that the equally urgent finan- cial problems will then be easier to solve.
If the new Cabinet should last for any length of time it is believed that the Govern- ment will attempt to restore normal relations with Italy by appointing an Ambassador to Rome and recognising the Italian conquest of Abyssinia. At present, owing to the dis- inclination to recognise the Italian Empire, France is represented in Rome only by a Minister-Trans Ocean.
