CAMERA SHY. Native children in Africa regard the lens of the camera as an eye of the Evil One. When the camera is point- ed at them they are practically hypnotised with fear and can neither move forward or backward. These two youngsters look decidedly un- happy and are really scared out of their wits. A picture from the -Sudan, (Couvright).

JAPANESE CLOSE

Fresh Source Of

Indignation In

Shanghai

Shanghai, To-day.

Much inconvenience and no little indignation was caused yesterday when the Japanese authori- ties, without having given previous warning, closed the Japanese occupied area beyond the British manned western perimeter of Shang- hai.

Foreigners who tried to go out riding or inspect properties in Hungjao were confronted by Japanese sentries who turned them back.

Nantao was also closed.

Reports began to circulate that reason for the action was that two Japanese soldiers had been killed on the western outskirts of Shanghai, but there is no confirmation. of this.

Hundreds of Chinese living be yond the western perimeter crossed into the British defence sector:

The "Shanghai Evening Post and Mercury" learns that closure of the area was due to the fact that a high Japanese official whose identity has not been disclosed, was making tour of inspection.

"In spite of the many sacrifices which Austria, as a German state, has had to make on her way to the normalising of her relations with her great neighbour, she has emerged strengthened from these developments and is firmly rooted in the unchanged principles of the Patriotic Front, in the great ideals of the constitution of 1934 and in her independence.”—Trans-Ocean.
