Questioned about the position of Sir Frederick Maze, Inspector-General of the Chinese Mari- time Customs, the Foreign Secretary stated in the House of Commons yesterday that he understood that certain obstacles were placed in his way in the exercise of his powers. In addition to the decree modifying in North China the Chinese Maritime Customs tariff schedule, thsre had been some interference to Customs examination and control at the wharves in Shanghai in the Japanese controlled area, and Japanese officers had taken over certain Cus- toms offices.
