The Chinese troops on the Shanghai-Nanking Railway are at present concentrating in the vicinity of Soochow, according to Chinese reports.

The left flank is holding positions in the vicini- ty of Kashing and Kashan.

That is the picture of the hos- tilities round Shanghai which is being painted by the Japanese press, which says that Soochow will fall at any moment now.

The papers say this would mean that one of the most care- fully constructed lines in the de- fence of Nanking would be broken through. Trans-Ocean.

TAIHU BATTLE

The Taihu Lake area is on the verge of becoming the ma- jor battlefield of the Chinese and Japanese armies, as the left wing of the Chinese forces, after withdrawing from Tai-. chong and Quinsan, has swung into prepared positions near Changshu in an effort to check the furious Japanese drive, ac- cording to Chinese reports.

Brisk engagements are in pro- gress at several points along both the Shanghai-Nanking and Shanghai-Hangchow railways.

Chinese reports say that the bitterest battle is taking place near Pingwang and Wangkiang- chin, along the Kashing-Soo- chow section of the railway, where a strong Japanese column is said to be making a desperate bid for Kashing and a foothold along the railway it-

The paper declares that aca demic discussion which tends to inflame and instigate ill-feeling, avails nothing in eliminating the real cause of unrest in the Far East and settling the Sino-Japanese conflict.

The Domei News Agency report ed recently that Dr. Hans Luther, former Chancellor of Germany, made the following declaration to the press at the Consulate General in Tientsin:
