TAZANG HOLDS: CHINESE FIGHT BACK STUBBORNLY

Shanghai, To-day.

Aim of the new Japanese offensive, which now appears to have pushed the Chinese back at some points, is Nanziang, on the Shanghai-Nanking Railway.

Foreign military observers in Shanghai con- sider that the offensive against Tazang was only a diverting manoeuvre, and that Nanziang is the real aim of the Japanese.

The sector north of Nanziang was under heavy drum fire from Japanese batteries all night, and this morning may see a fresh Japanese push in this direction.

Meanwhile the Chinese troops in Chapei and Kiangwan maintain their positions, though there has been no serious fighting in this sector. Trans- Ocean.
