The fierce battle which has been raging for days on the Shanghai front, with both Chinese and Jap- anese striving to bring about a final decision, seems to be growing in intensity and rising to a crescendo of fury.

It is announced that the usual train from Canton to Hankow is not leaving to-night.

Officials refuse to comment on whether much damage has been done to the track by Japanese air raids but this is generally presumed to be the case.

Meanwhile, the first raid this morning is also believed to have been directed against the Canton- Hankow Railway-Reuter.
