HOPES REVIVE OF ITALY'S ADHERENCE TO THE NYON ARRANGEMENT: ROMETALKS

Italy yesterday maintained a non-committal attitude on the Nyon anti-Piracy Agreement.

Following two interviews between the Foreign Minister, Count Ciano, and the British and French charge d'affaires, a communique says that the charge d'affaires asked for further information as to the significance of the Italian note of September 14.

The Note had given rise to contradictory in- terpretations regarding acceptance or otherwise on the part of Italy of collaboration in Mediter- ranean patrol.

Count Ciano made it clear that the Italian Government, in raising the question of parity. of rights, intend ed to establish that a position equal to that of the fleets of France and Britain must be reserved for the Italian fleet if it was to be enabled. to participate in naval measures.

The German Govgement, says the communique, has been informed of this stand

Thus Italy has not yet offered-co- operation.

Nevertheless, the visits of the charge d'affaires causes satisfaction in Rome, as indicating that Britain. and France wish to overcome the anti-piracy. deadlock.

It is suggested that there will be no more talk of Italy having » to humiliate herself by applying to the Nyon Conference for concessions of parity

Fears that Italy might be ignored in patrol are also dissipated, and it is now felt that the path is clearer for conclusion of a compromise. Reuter.
