FINAL TEST ENDS IN DRAW

Despite an enterprising effort by RW.V. Robins, England's skipper, to forces a definite decision, the final test match against New Zea- land, ended in a draw.

Thanks to fine bating by Denis Compton and Hardstaff, England recovered from rather an anxious situation yesterday morning, and Robins declared when the New Zealand total had been topped by five runs.

Compton in his first match for England, made a good impression was sound although his batting

rather than brilliant. He was un-- fortunate to be run out when he seemed well set for a first-appear lance century.«

Hardstaff, except for a chance at 46, batted faultlessly and hit 16 fours during his stay of 170- minutes.

Remaining England hatsmen: were very unconvincing.

DECLARATION JUSTIFIED Robins decision in declaring with such a slender lead was part- ly justified. A hot sün and a dry- ing wicket found the New Zealand batsmen in difficulties and they lost their first three wickets with only 46 runs on the board

H. G. Vivian, whose batting was a feature of the last test, then bat ted courageously and utilised an enterprising variety of strokes, but chief honours must go to Moloney who played a typical rearguard: action and, together with Tindall, who was undefeated: at the close. for 37, was mainly responsible for the thwarting of England.

With a few minutes for play remaining, England lost the wicket of Barnett whilst 31- runs were hoisted.
