Stuffed velvet pads used for polishing shoes require re-covering from time to time. An old beret of cloth or velvet may be cut in half and used to make a new cover. Shoe-brushes that have been in use for a while should be washed in rm soapy water to which a little ammonia has been added. . If they are allowed to become soiled and sticky they do not polish well.

For holiday use a tube of white cream is the best. It is suitable. for leather shoes of any colour, and it has the advantage of being less liable than brown or black polish to mark light stockings. If brushes with black bristles are used for both black and brown shoes those in- tended for brown ones should have a distinguishing mark on the back. Muddy or dusty shoes are much easier to clean, if they are wiped over with a damp cloth as soon as they are taken off and then allowed to dry before they are brushed and polished in the usual way.
