Austin was undoubtedly a worse player at the French championship this year than last because he had not had the benefit of any "First ten" match before the meeting.

In other years he has had a test ing match with Perry at Bourne mouth, possibly games against “First ten” men on the Riviera and harder preliminary matches in Paris itself.

EQUAL-CLASS TRAINING

This question of equal-class practice is the key to success among the top- men to-day. It explains why Budge, able to play regularly against fast, searching tennis (some of it, by the way, provided by Perry) in California, comes to New York and later to Wimbledon in tune for big tennis.

It explains why Henkel has made an advance so rapid that he was. able to win the French champion- ship with the loss of only one set.

HIGH CLASS; PLAY

Henkel has played four matches this year already against his com- patriot, Von Cramm. In the South of France, Egypt and Germany he has been set new problems to solve, had his ambition fired by high-class play.

But I would also emphasise that Henkel is a keen student of the game's tactics and finer points. He does not doze when watching his coming opponents in court. Like Lacoste, he looks on to learn, and I found from conversation

that, he "sizes"upon with him

GERMAN'S BIG TASK

The Germans have a long way to go yet before they can lodge the Davis Cup in Berlin for the first time. Before they meet America in the inter-zone contest they will have to exchange, turf courts for sand courts and come back to turf, they will have to escape accident or illness, which ruined -their-quest last year.

The? V.R.C.: rely; mostly on speed- for their victories and very little positional play is indulged in. This is probably not their fault entirely, as the size of their pool naturally restricts their methods of play. They should win the Interport water-polo match against Shanghai, Tientsin and Kobe comfortably, however, they have rarely been bettered in this department of the Interport series.
