This represented a margin of nearly three-quarters of a mile.

RANGER WAS EQUIPPED WITH THE OLD MAST. AND. SAILS OF MR. CHANDLER HOVEY'S RAINBOW AS SHE HAD LOST HER OWN MAST IN A RECENT STORM. WHILE SHOW ING RANGER TO BE A VERY FAST REACHING YACHT, THIS TRIAL WAS NO ALL-ROUND TEST OF SPEED OWING TO THE FACT THAT THERE WAS NO STRONG WIND DURING THE WINDWARD LEG.

The trial started from Brenton's Reef Lightship at 6.40 p.m. B.S.T. Yankee led Ranger over the starting line, but Ranger, breaking out a huge Genoa jib, bore off under Yankee's stern and within 10 minutes had sailed through her lee into the lead.

WILL BE BUSY UNTIL SEPTEMBER

Ranger's Genoa jib, set over a big staysail, pulled her along easily. At the end of the 15- mile leg Ranger rounded the buoy three minutes ahead of Yankee. The latter lost further time by changing her jibs at the turn.

Most of the way home both yachts laid a course to starboard with Yankee pointing higher, but gàining no ground on Ranger.

UNNECESSARY TACK

Each yacht took a short- and probably unnecessary tack near the finish, but, practically, the course consisted of two ̈reaches, which were favourable to the long and heavy Ranger with her big foretriangle.
