HE first M.C.C. victory against Yorkshire since 1907, a fighting innings of 161 by Hutton, the welcome appearance of the New Zealand cricket- ers in the nets - these were the main events at Lord's yesterday.

Hutton's innings began uncertainly, continued stubbornly, and ended militantly. There were times in the morning when Stephen- son shook and startled him, but unobtrusively he settled down to play with admirable patience.
