NEW GOLF COURSE AT ST. ANDREWS

Town Council's Plan

London, March 30. St. Andrews, famous all over the world for its golf links, is con- sidering the layout of a fifth course. The meeting of the St. Andrews Town Council last night intimated that the council

was

negotiating for the purchase from the University of a large tract of ground on St. Nicholas farm, ad- joining the East Sands.

If the council obtains the land it proposes to use it for the build- ing of bathing shelters, and, if suitable, it will explore

the pos- sibility of constructing a nine- hole golf course.

JOE DARLING PROPOSES FINE IDEA

OLD CRICKETERS' FUND

LOOKING AFTER TEST PLAYERS

(By J. C. DAVIS).

Sydney, March 11.

Mr. Joe Darling, captain of the 1899, 1902, and 1905 Australian XI's in England visited Mel- bourne from Tasmania to see the final Test match. As he surveyed the big crowds from the Mel- bourne C. C, committee room, on the balcony, he swept his hand across with eloquent emphasis, and said, "This is wonderful.”

"Don't you think," he said to me, "an

Old Cricketers' Fund should be established by the Board of Control?" "We have one in Sydney," was the reply. Hurriedly breaking in, Joe ejacu- latêd: "That's right! But we want something bigger than that, to apply generally to old players throughout Australia."

"Good idea! You ought to bring it forward and invite everyone, in- cluding the Board of Control and the associations, to assist it," said the writer.

a

I strangly, favour the fund, start to be made with a match here "next season," said the old fighting Australian, as he again waved his hand to indicate the double-decker and all the smaller deckers round the field.

AUSTRALIA v THE, REST “Australía versus The Rest! We have played them before. It would be a good start for the fund."

One pointed out that a match of somewhat similar nature was to be played in Adelaide as a testimonial to VC, Grimmett and V. Y. Rich- ardson early next season.

THIS IS ALL WRONG

"That's one; of course," said the old Australian captain, “but other could be played here."

"And still" another in Sydney,” one added.

QUICK START

"Yes," responded Joe. Enthusiasm lighted up his face as he stated that he would endeavour to get the move- ment started before, he went back to his island home.

There is a strong human appeal underlying this suggestion.

well

It comes from one who is fixed in life for old comrades of his and others who may not be in so happy a position.

The Board of Control does not ofter meet. The idea might be best exploited by the leading cricket as- sociations giving it their best cou- sideraton, They meet every month.
