GOSANO'S SPLENDID

PERFORMANCE

CAMPBELL FAILS BADLY AT CENTRE-HALF

WONG MEI-SHUN SEEN AT HIS BEST

SO

(By "Referee")

OME delightful football was witnessed on the Hong Kong Football Club ground yesterday when the Rest of the Colony defeated the Com- bined Services by 3 goals to 1 in the annual charity match in aid of the Poppy Day Fund and before a fairly large gathering including His Excellency the Governor, Sir Andrew Caldecott, and Rear-Admiral C. G. Sedgwick, RN, Commo dore, who kicked off.

For the first time in many months the Services were com- pletely outclassed, although they were given enough openings to have levelled the scores on several occasions, but they simply would not attempt to shoot in the penalty area and as a result their attempts were blocked on almost every occasion.

The outstanding features of the game were the splendid, display given by Wilson and Bickford, the Rest's left-wing païr, and the sterling displays at full-back by Gosano and Costa, the latter after a very indifferent start.

It was in the second half that the Rest's defence came into the limelight, Gosano being brilliant, and the Services' for- wards very rarely got beyond their opponents' intermediate line. The Best, however, were without two of their best halves in Beltrao and Lee Kwok-wai, Henry, Yeung and Wong Mei- sbun filling the vacancies.

Henry Yeung Disappoints Henry Yeung did not show up at all well until the last 15 or 20 minutes of the game, but Wong Mei-shun was seen in one of his very rare brilliant spells and dis- tributed the ball with deadly ac-1 etracy. He played a constructive game and spoiled magnificently. throughout, combining excellently with Leung Wing-chiu. on his right.

VICTORY OVER ZURICH RECALLED

London, October 8. After holding office for four seasons Mr. J. H. Page has re- tired from the post of captain of Thames Rowing Club, and has been succeeded by the Hon. C. R Allanson-Winn. R. C. Harman, the deputy, has also retired, and' is succeeded by E. A. Szilagyi, the Cambridge Bine.

Allanson-Winn has had a dis- tinguished rowing career. He has been a member of Thames for nearly ten years, and during that time has helped the club in most of the big events. He was No. 7° in the crew which won the Thames Cup at Henley in 1923, when. Eric Beresford, our Olympic oarsman, was stroke..
