KEEN RACING OVER SPRINT DISTANCES EXPECTED TO-MORROW

UNORTHODOX IDEAS

NEEDED IN RUGBY METHODS WHICH MIGHT BEAT WING FORWARDS WHY NOT DO AWAY WITH LINE-OUTS?

R

(By Howard Marshall)

London, October 14. UMINATING, in my elderly way, upon that excellent game between. Blackheath and Newport, it occurred to me that here was a typi cal exposition of modern Rugby football.

Not

a single try scored by a wing going bald-headed for the line after orthodox passing.

Plenty of tries scored by forwards, by individual oppor tunism, by cleverly placed kicking. No scrummaging in the old-fashioned sense no wheeling, that is, to say. or straight Any amount shoving, and not a great deal of really fast heeling.

of swift forward work in the open, and a general smash-and-grab spirit developed very highly. And all of it most attractive to watch, and doubtless most amusing to play.

Blackheath won because their forwards were quicker on the kill and very satisfactory it was to see the fire and dash of the Blackheath pack. Newport, for all that, showed us a more deliberate application of modern strategy, with the diagonal kick from midfield and the cross-kick from the wing as their main: weapons. Their constant aim was to switch the direction of attack unexpectedly, and in this their principles were sound.
