Speaking in the House of Commons yesterday, reviewing the foreign situation, the Foreign Secretary, Mr. Anthony Eden, said that he would not emulate the practice of making statements on international policy from public rostrums in unsubdued tones. but it was desirable to state the Government's view plainly. Government anti-aircraft guns mounted the top of tall buildings near Reuter's correspon- dent's house successfully drove two huge insurgent bombers to a higher altitude for safety, while citizens scurried for shelter.

Later the correspondent motored in the direction of Getafe, the sector where the insurgents made a major advance, and found the roads blocked at intervals by bar- ricades of sandbags and paving- stones, thronged by refugees streaming to Madrid from all, the roads along which the insurgents are advancing.
