Graham removes one of the xrandes: humorists from the ranks of English letters. Nobody caught quite so successfully as he that delightful blend of ferocity and humour which is evident throughout his original "Ruthless: Rhymes for Heartless Homes," first published in 1899, and recap- tured so thoroughly in the "More Ruthless Rhymes," issued in 1930 with priceless illustrations by Ridgewell My memory is a bit wonky on the originals, but surely that one of his best efforts BUS plaintive ditty which ran some- thing as follows:-

'NIGHT MUST FALL”
FINE PRODUCTION BY LOCAL A.D.C.
FIRST-CLASS ACTING IN MOVING PLAY
One might attempt to label Emlyn Williams' "Night Must Fall," triumphantly presented last evening at the Ching Fleet Club Theatre before a most enthusiastic and attentive audience by the local AD.C., by calling it a tragis farce, a farcical tragedy or a tragi-comedy. But one would still be wrong, since it resolutely refuses to fall into any preconceived category. The simplest thing to do is to call it just a play-and a very good Į play, too-and leave it at that. It is a well constructed and well written essay in the drama, and though it exploits the age-old devices of the acid-tongued old woman, the wise-cracking cook and the sentimental maid, and provides in the character of |Hubert Laurie what must surely be one of the least sympathetic jund most difficult nonentities to portray on any stage, it [approaches something like brilliance in its delineation of two jacutely-drawn characters in Dax and Olivia Grayne.
