DOUBLE TENTH SUPPLEMENT

A DOCTOR SUN YAT SEN, THE MAZZINI OF CHINA

G

IFTED with exceptional intelligence and a re markable power for revolu- tionary organisation, the late Dr. Sun Yat-sen (Sun Wen) was mainly responsible for the overthrow of the Mira- chu Dynasty. He was the life and soul of the democra- tic revolution of 1911. and has rightly been called the "Mazzini of China."

Born in the year 1866 in the Hsiangshan District of Kwang- "tung. Dr. Sun received his pri-. mary education in the Anglican Mission School, and subsequent- ly entered the Hawaii College in Honolulu. On his return to Hong Kong he continued his studies at Queen's College. After paying another visit to Honolulu he re- turned to China to take up the study of medicine, first in Canten and afterwards in Hong Kong.

"It was while studying-in-Hong Kong that the late President of political China commenced his

carcer. He organised a secret society called the Chung Hsing Hui with the intention of over- throwing the Manchu Dynasty, but he soon had to flee to Hono- lulu and then to America to save his life as the organisation en- countered many difficulties, sever- al of his comrades being arrested. and beheaded.

DR. SUN YAT SEN,

In 1993, when only 27 years of age, he was kidnapped in Lon- don by members of the Chinese Legation at the instance of the Chinese Government. He, how- ever, managed to communicate with his comrades, and obtained his liberty from the British Gov- erament.

While in Tokyo in

successfully united all the differ- ent elements of the anti-dynastic movement into a formidable re- volutionary party, which was: called the Tung Meng Hui, and planned the revolution of 1911.

Soon after the Revolution, which, owing to a misunderstand ing between Dr. Sun and Gener- al Huang Hsing, who had the

task of carrying out the scheme, broke out earlier than scheduled, Dr. Sun hurried to London from America, and, exerting himself before the British Authorities, obtained the three following pro- mises:

"That no loans, would be grant- ed to the Manchus."

"That the orders for Dr. Sun's deportation from the British co- lonies of Hong Kong. Singapore and Penang be cancelled."

That Japan would be prevented from interfering in favour of the Manchus,"

On his return to Nanking. Dr. Sun was elected President of the Chinese Republic, by the Ro publican Government. but im- mediately after the abdication of in the Manchus, he resigned favour of Yuan Shih-kai, as his goal, the overthrow of the Man- chu Dynasty, had been accom- plished. However, when Yuan Shih-kai, turning traitor to the Republic. wished to establish himself Emperor of China. Dr. Sun strongly opposed him and subsequently the name of the re- volutionary party was changed to "Komintang" or "The People's party."

During the years that followed, Dr. Sun figured prominently in the many hostilities, which were organised against him and his followers, and it was not until May 5. 1921, that he formally became President of China
