FOOTBALLERS IMPROVE GROUND ·
(By "The Twelfth Man")
London, July 23. THERE is considerable curiosity as to what will happen to the Lea Bridge ground, where Clapton Orient play football, now that it has changed hands, or, at least, now a considerable part of it has changed hands. I know that build- ers have had their eyes on it. Indeed, a builder nearly clinched a deal for it just about a year ago.
I think it can be said with some certainty that the Lea Bridge ground will be saved for sport. I have been told that plans have been considered for the development of the site to embrace an up-to-date sports stadium and an Ice Hockey rink. It was intended that £250,000 should be spent on it.
These plans allowed for the football pitch to be moved back further from the main road in order to give ample space on the main frontage for the Ice Hockey rink; and it was intended that boxing would be staged at Lea Bridge on a pretty big scale..
How far these plans may have to be altered because the major portion of the site has been bought by someone out- side the circle of sportswwen who were interested in this particular venture I cannot say.
I believe it is their intention to Igo on with their scheme. In any case, Mr. E. Bass has still thir- teen years of his leasehold of Lea Bridge to run
