AMES J. Jeffries, king of the heavyweights for six years at the turn of the century, is con- vinced that modern fighters don't measure up to the old-timers, and that Fitzsimmons, Corbett or "most any of the boys" could have taken Joe Louis in their prime.

Big Jim, still the powerful giant of 35 years ago, was found puttering around in Jerries barn, his amateur fighting arena here on the outskirts of Los Angeles. Jeffries, not 50 pounds over his former fighting weight of 206, has lived on his 100 acre: rand for some 30 years and keeps his hand in the fight game by refereeing the Thursday night card in his remodelled barn.

We sat on folding ringside chairs while Jim recalled such ring immortals as Bob Fitzsimmons, Jim Corbett, John Sullivan. Tom Sharkey and all the other old-timers. A gray hat was slouched over his eyes and occasionally a big, brawny hand lifted a cigarette to his mouth as he spoke:

London, July 25. IT is a little over ten years ago old age is creeping on-that I was first selected to play for Great Britain in a Davis Cup match. On ad- vice from my elders, however, I turned down the invitation.

Davis Cup tennis, they said, would interfere with what is generally known by that imposing word "studies." And it was not until the spring of 1929 that I had the honour of being invit- ed to play in the team again.
