RACE BY WOMEN DIVERS

(By Aquatic).

London, May 21. 1937 the Empire Swimming Club are institut- ing an open championship meeting on the same lines as the A.S.A. The championships will be open, like the English titles, to the world.

The idea is that as it will be four or five years before the A.S.A. championships are again held in the South, this new meeting will take their place. The Empire championships will not, of course, be held in the years when the ASA titles are decided in the South.

This is a big venture; I hope it goes forward. It will bring the stars of other areas to London and make swimming, in general, more attractive. An interesting race is going on between four of England's leading women highboard divers.

They are, I believe, unknown Alexander, the Southern Counties to one another, but all are keen champion, Miss Madge Moulton, to be the first woman in this who dived in the Empire Games, country to turn a one and a half and Miss Tony Williams. somersault off the ten metres board.

no reason why they should not jancceed on the higher board.

The four divers think the pre- sent Olympic high-board cham-i pionship is not a fair test of fancy diving, and this is the reason why they are so keen to accomplish the more difficult dives.

CRUMBLE

M.C.C. MAKE GOOD RECOVERY

(By Howard Marshall)

London, May 18.

UNTIL four o'clock on Saturday afternoon the first day's play in the match between M.C.C. and All-India at Lord's lacked character. We had seen Mohamed Nissar bowling with fire, and Hendren twinkling up and down the wicket, but the game, somehow, seemed flat. The batsmen, alarmed perhaps by the sugges- tion of a spot when Nissar made the ball fly, had fallen back upon the passive cricket which pro- duces runs as an afterthought.

Let me say, before we go any further, that in the end the M.C.C. total was 382, which is sufficiently respectable, and All- India, with all their wickets in hand and six runs on the board, must be wondering a little uneasily how the pitch will behave for the first hour or two this morning. It was beyond question lively before lunch on Saturday, and the batsmen frequently examined that spot at the Pavilion end as if they expected to find a foreign body embedded there.

Possibly a combination of this liveliness and the accuracy. of the All-India attack may explain the flavourless batting, but even Hendren was relatively subdued. Now and again that superbly aggressive hook of his flashed out-he hooked a not- too-short ball from Nissar off his ribs once with startling violence and he danced out to the slower bowlers with menacing intent.
