The Policeman's Tie-Pin
(Continued from Post 9).
protested that she was innocent, the victim of some treachery; but by then the ship had sailed.
and
Though he moved heaven earth to get in touch with her later, he had failed greatly to the relief of both his wife and Ananda Chetty, to whom it was: obvious what sort of a woman shej really was.
course, the whole thing seemned plain enough to me. What-I ever Ananda Chetty might say. the disappearance of the nearly completed necklace and of Webster together could not be a coinci- dence sad, when we got Webster, we would without doubt get the pearls too.
I sent off telegrams to Bombay and sure enough. within a few hours the police there had tracked him down to one of the botels, where also Madame Jaques was found. She at once showed up in her true colours and abused both them and Webster in the vilest language
Well, the police did not find the pearls, but they got a good haul of amuggled drugs from one of Madame's boxes, and it transpired later that that was what had got her into trouble at Marseilles pre- viously, though on that occasion she had just managed to evade conviction.
Webster, of course, was escort. ed back to Mahore, and in a very. chastened frame of mind. When I saw him he was weeping and begging to see his wife; but he, declared complete ignorance about the pearls.
Then, in response to 2 pote from Ananda Chetty, I went round to see the old fellow. Imagine my surprise when I found him bear- ing.
"My dear friend Webster," hel cried. "is rescued from that she- devil and his family saved from despair. I cannot thank you suffi- ciently. sir, for bringing this about
"He dearly loves his wife and children, and it was just some un- canny hold this dreadful Woman had on him. That spell is broken now that he has seen her as she really is.
"Arresting criminals," he con- tinued, "and bringing them to justice this is a painful, though! necessary, duty of the police, but how much more noble a thing it

"But the pearls-" I began.
"Ah, the pearis! Did I not say from the start that Webster would. not have taken them? But for- tunately you did not believe me!"
As be spoke, he suddenly got up and went into a back room. turning at once with a tray con- taining the Rajah's pearls them- selves! They were not threaded then but mounted row upon row according to their size.
re-
For a moment I was too Sur- prised to speak. There were the -priceless jewels before my very
eyes.
"But how were they restored to you? I exclaimed.
"They we never stolen," he said gently. "For any offence I have committed in the eyes of the law I am ready to take the official consequences; but I beg of you personally as a friend to forgive me for having tricked you, much) against my will
"The pearls were never in the safe at all; I keep them in ar iron chest under my cot A rob- ber might break open the large safe, but who would think to look) under a bed?
"I deceived you, but how else could I save my friend from ruin and his poor sweet wife and children from deepest despair!
He sat down, a serene smile spreading over his aged features. He picked up a pearl which out- shone all the rest in purity and milky lustre.
"This very morning." he said, "I purchased a pearl to replace this one, which is just too rare and perfect of colour to match the others equally. I shall have it made into a tie-pin, and want you to accept it."
Of course, officially, I ought to have been angry with the ald chap, even though he had been the indirect cause of arresting a dan-; gerous drug-runner; but as it was my heart warmed: towards him. I realised the depth of his affection for his English friends, and—well, you will admit it is a very fine peart.
