Over And Done With
(Continued from Page 9)
Jill's grey eyes ran over him re- flectively, sizing up the man she] was about to renounce.
Charles big, like his no- ther. Atrife beary for his years; } would probably be fat at forty. He patronised an excellent tailor. was always faultlessly turned out; But now, regarding him with eyes no longer out of focus through emotional disturbances, Jill realis ed with a little shudder that Chur- les was smug.
Yes quite definitely smug! How could she have ever contemplated hira as a husband?
Charles picked up his hat, his stick, his gloves, and turned for a last word.
"I go now. believe me I'll never come back. You can't play i fast and loose with a Bagshot"
Jill assured him that she had no desire to play fast and loose with anyone. Her heart smote her when she saw how demoralised he was,
She went close, put one; long-fingered hand on his tweed coat sleeve. Said in that lilting. seductive voice of hers:
"Charles, dear, please believe me
when I say I am sorry.”
He flung off her placating hand. marched into the small lounge hall. and banged the front door behind him with a violence that: made the bungalow quiver.
The daily girl poked a surpris-
ed countenance round the edge of
the kitchen door.
"Bin rowin'," she said briefly,
to the cat.
Jill's mother was sitting quiet-
ly in the back garden knitting. ! blissfully unconscious of the drama going on indoors. She was very Sonel of knitting, but not very good at it.
At present she was at work on little shoes for her elder daugh- ter's baby. She had already made quite a lot, but they had a most tiresome hahit of turning out dif-. ferent sizes, and she was obliged: to start over again.
There was quite a regiment of} add little shoes put away in а drawer, none of them pairing, butį Mrs. Darling had not yet aban- doned hope of success.
She glanced up abstractedly as her daughter appeared.
over,"
"Thank goodness that's observed Jill. flopping into an or ange deck-chair with a sigh,
"What's over ?′′ Her mother's attention was only partially dis- tracted from her precious knitting. "Two plaid, two purl-"
"I'm free," said Jill, "Free?" Vaguely Mrs. Darling raised eyes as grey as Jill's own.
The girl held out her left hand. bare of the handsome stone that had glittered there for the last six months.
"Looks funny without it, doesn't i?" continued Jill. looking at beri third finger. I feel quite nude."
Mrs. Darling dropped the baby
shoe in consternation.
"My dear not again!"
Jill nodded.
"Um! Couldn't help it, mumsie. I'd have murdered poor Charles if I'd gone on."
Mrs. Darling looked shattered. "You've ruined my Saturday afternoon. 1.so enjoy Saturday afternoons in the garden, with you home from the office and every-j thing. Jill, what made you do it? Have you quarrelled?"
"Oh, no. Charles came to take me along to watch him sign the contract for the house. And sud- denly I knew I couldn't. It's been coming an quite a time, of course -this cooling off Charles. At first he seemed so restful after Bill's) wild enthusiasms and Arthur's terseness. I liked his calm, pe- dantic manner, his assured posi- tion in the world. I felt I'd bel secure with Charles. Please, mum- sie. try to understand."
Jill clasped slim hands round hunched up knees and gazed un- seeingly at the hollyhock border.
"And then, gradually. I began. to wake up. Just as if I'd been doped, and the drug was wearing of Charles started to get on my Derves. Elis mannerisms-even when bis back view at tennis standing up at the net. He always would bend and look. ridiculous.i Ok, and heaps of tiny silly things that count terribly if you're going to marry a man And then his conversation irritated me, he was "always so -smug."
D.
Mrs. Darling nodded.
"A trifle, perhaps. But a most estimable fellow, and so well-off.
"Now, mumsie-don't be mer- cenary,"
