Addis Ababa, To-day.

The British ambulance officer, Dr. Melly, was shot at and seriously wounded by an Ethio- pian yesterday morning. Dr. Melly stopped his car to pick up a wounded Ethiopian when the drunken leader of a mob of rioters thrust his re- volver into the car and shot Dr. Melly in the lung. It is understood that he is now at Sir Sidney Bar- ton's house, being attended by two doctors and a nurse. It is hoped that he will recover.

The few Europeans left outside the Legation. passed a night of terror. They barricaded their houses, fearing the attacks of looters.

There was a constant fusilade of shots, mostly in the air. all night long by Ethiopians "making whoopee" with unlimited ammunition. Over 1,000 refugees are camped in tents and huts in the British Legation, including the Abuna, the Egyptian head of the Ethiopian Church.

Addis Ababa, To-day. When the sun rose on Addis Ababa yester- day morning, there was little to be seen but heaps of smoking ruins. If, according to plan, the Ita- lians enter the capital to-day, they will find no- thing but ashes.

Ever since the Negus left, plundering has been going on in all directions. Before the Emperor left the Imperial archives and the State treasure was removed under convoy of a section of the.. Imperial Guard, who left the city in a westerly direction. This having been accomplished, the Negus ordered that all the gates of the Imperial Palace should be opened to the mob, who surged in and began to demolish the building.

Soon men and women were seen leaving the Palace, heavily laden with rich garments, valuable cloths. hangings and furni ture, as well as weapons of all kinds. Also stores of ammuni- tion buried in the courtyard of the Palace were distributed among the crowd.

At first the sudden acquisition of the great treasure put the crowd in good humour, but with alcohol, quarrelling, turmoil and chaos-started, becoming exceedingly serious when robber bands from the neighbouring hills poured into the city. The reason why the Legations escaped the conflagration is that, with the ex- ception of the United States Legation, they are all outside the
