A new craze for initials is sweep- ing the coastal pleasure-resorts of the continent. Every day return- ing holiday-makers are arriving carrying with them the fruit of this latest treasure-hunt.

This variegated alphabetical in- vasion, truth to tell, meets an army already in possession, but the home contingents are not quite so fan- tistic and alluring *x the way legions that have crossed the Chan- nel

*

The initial craze, of course, start- ed in correct conventional style a season or two ago as a chic dress accessory adopted by the Parisian dressmakers.

Popularity soon killed the fashion that was loved too well for the - ing of exclusive dressmakers.

But the unruly initials refused to surrender their pitches on jumper and cardigan, tailored lapel, beret, and belt. As pendants, clips, broo ches and bracelet decorations they remained triumphant best-sellers and twinkled defiance at the dress- makers

There is glamour too in the quest for the right initial. "Initials are so common." Say's the fastidious woman a little superciliously, but sooner or later there comes an odd half-hour in the holiday programme: when she catches the infection.

It happens not infrequently that the last to fall victims catch the new epidemic in its aggravated, multiple form. Did not she who writes this remain immune till the last hour of the last day, and on her way to the boat pause thought- lessly at the jeweller's widow where three little wooden symbols were assembled in the corner of a tray? Modernist they were in design and fully meriting the shop ticket that proclaimed "le dernier cri," yet there was an oddly familar sir about that little group. Who could resist these faithful friends of a lifetime or have the heart to leave them unclaimed in a foreign land?
