S. AFRICAN CHAMPION CRUSHED BY AUSTIN

MRS. WHITTINGSTALL'S SURPRISE DEFEAT:

BOURNEMOUTH SURVIVORS

A. WALLIS MYERS

Bournemouth, May 2.

THE

THE sands of Bournemouth are running out, and to-day the men's singles was reduced to the last three and the women's singles to the last four.

Of these survivors only one hails from over- seas. Austin swept the South African champion, Norman Farquharson, off the centre court this afternoon, playing perfect tennis and losing only five games.

To-day Perry will attempt to keep the sheet wholly British by engaging, Daniel Prenn. Incidentally, one may note that these two have not met, since the remarkable Davis Cup contest in Ber- Fin in 1932

Only once was he really nonplussed, and this was in the third set when Far- { quharson undercut a ball so vicious- ly that it screwed back over the net, and althongh Austin reached over, as he was entitled to do, be could not even touch the ball w cutstretched racket, and merrily

signalised the coup by dropping his chin on to the band of the net about the only moment when he relaxed his tension.
