form a half-collar edging for the front neckline or they may be separated to clip on at different parts of the ensemble. There is
new craze for diamonds in dress clips, buckles, necklaces and tiaras. Marcassite, which is amazingly inexpensive, is used again for beautiful evening brace- lets, in massive squares, linked circles or encrusted strips. Smoked crystal, carved in an original design, and encrusted with. tur- quoise or emerald stones, makes a fashionable and very beautiful bracelet. One of these bracelets worn with a pair of long, glitter- ing earrings to match is a per fect accompaniment to the now evening gowns. Dress rings made of semi-precious stones have waned in popularity. Women are beginning to feel that unless they can afford the genuine article, they would rather dispense with rings entirely. Occasionally one sees a massive ring of carved crystal matching a bracelet or dress clip, but these are affecta- . tions that can only be worn with certain frocks and not constantly.

A Quick Change
"How dress and make up?"
TOW long does it take you
And the smartest woman present said: "It takes me half ist hour to change, bath, and, make up in the evening. I can't allow such frivolities to take up more of my time than that."
As this particular woman's ap pearance was studied in every de tail, we were naturally interested to hear more about her design for a perfect toilet, and pressed her for detalls. This was her routine.
Turn on bath water. Asseinble the complete evening, kit-dress, stockings, shoes, cloak, acessories, evening bag filled with, forrect shade of powder and fipstick, ráüge for touching up, spare handkerchief, keys, money. (Five minutes),
Remove street clothes. Put on dressing-gown. ' Brush and comb hair. Spray with setting lotion or perfume. Finger the waves into place and pin stray ends closely to the hem. Instead of setting net when time is pressing, a silk hand- kerchief or square of thin silk, sprinkled with oil, can be used to Lie round the head when dressing. The all will give the hair a lovely noft glows without the necessity for much brushing. In case of accid- ents the handkerchief should be re- moved and a net placed over the head before putting on dress." (Five minutes.)

Leave the skin food on while. having a bath. Remove cream, first with warm, then with cold,. water. Soak a clean linen hand- kerchief in strong astringent and press to the face. Leave string. ent to dry while dressing, (Seven minutes,)
Apply the foundation for powder and make-up to the face, neck, arms and shoulders. While this is drying, whiten nail-tips with nail- strings or nail pencil (Three niinuter.)
Put on dress and finish up in the following order:
Rouge-powder-brush off pow der. Moke up eyelids and lashes. Lipstick, a touch of e mpact rouge. Powder. Remove hair net. Rinse Angers in warin water. (Five. minutes.)
And that completes the half-hour evening toilet.
"Much the same routine is fol. lowed, in the morning," she went on to say. "I never leave manicure or special face packs until the night I am going out. Instead, I get up half an hour earlier and attend to these important details each morn.. ing.
It was worth trying, we decided.

BEAUTY DIARY
▼OU cannot really buy lovely
and luxuriant locks at the cost of some magical treatment. Many women fail in their quest of beautiful hair, notwithstand- ing the sacrifice of much time and treasure, because they do not understand that the founda- tion, of fine hair is perfect health. Once that is attained
but only then-there are cer- tainly treatments and prepara-/ tions that will be of great help.
The three things that the hair needs. are cleanliness, nourishment - und uncouragement. To ensure the first, shampooing should not be re- sorted to more often than once in every ten days.. Bath cleansing and external nourishing can' be achieved by rubbing a little Ver- benu oil into the roots about once a week, and dust can be removed with a small dust comb. If brushes. and combs are cleaned daily with cotton wool dipped in spirit, they will effect most of the "shampoo- ing" themselves.
I
But what the hair neeils most of all is encouragement. Naturally, it springs upward and outward, and
||||||32|3449245334||||| brushed in these directions 'instead of the ordinary downward strokes it is surprising how readily it responds. It ceases to full, it; becomes live and springy, new lights appear. There is something' too about this upward brushing that soothes. The change of feeling in one's head in delightful and Im- mediate. The hair feels lighter and freer. And perhaps "most im- portant of all it is an action that courts restful sleep..

Fashions in gowns and hats have turned young and the grace lies in the line, and movement. Let us see how we can improve the contour of the face and add to it youthfulness. For toning and nourishing the skin, there is a system of facial massage you can do in conjunction with a ́skin and tissue building cream,

I
All the massage movements must be upward and outward. It should be a semi-rotary movement, the fingers creeping and moving in half-circles without leaving the face, at the same time pressing them. gently but firmly into the skin. Never repeat over the same spot unless going in the same direc tion.

Movement one begins at the side of the mouth and moves outwards below the cheekbone.
Movement two begins at the wings of the nostrils and goes up- wards towards the eyes.
Movement three begins near the eyebrows and works upwards to- wards the hairline,
Movement four begins at the junction of nose and forehead... working upwards towards the hair line, across the forehead,
For the older woman a sterner type of massage has much to com- mend it. After a through cleans- ing of the skin, smooth in a feed- ing cream. With the thumb and first finger start at the lower corner of the mouth and work up along the expression line with amall pinching movements. Don't jus leave a surface impression, but lift the flesh so as to get at the lower- seated muscles,
از
The same pinching movement is uned for the contour line that rung from the centre of the chin along the jawbone right up to the lobe of the ear. Then, starting at the, nese, work out over the eye and in under the eye so as to make a com- plete circle. Avoid pressing on the eyeball, but get down to the muscles, as these, when relaxed, cause the lids to droop,
Another system with a vibrator or patter is really an adjunct of lund massage and is. excellent for whipping up a sluggish circulation. A patter with a spring handle has a definite suction action; it stimu- lates and at the same time helps to feed the cream into the pores. The best method is to wrap a wisp of cottonwool round the patter, soak in astringent and slap the colour briskly. Vibrators for home use can now be obtained quite inexpen- sively and should be used for a few minutes two or three times a week.
WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL CLUB (CONTINUED) and well-wishers. Especially at the time of its removal from the Chung Tin Building to the pre- sent quarters did benefactors come forward with gifts.
Sir Victor Sassoon, who was a visitor in Hong Kong during Race Week, visited the Club, and was so impressed with the work, going forward there that he later sent a cheque for $500, which will be used for buying an additional refrigerator,
Mrs. Hall of the Caravan sent a gift of glassware, the attractive" black and white tumblers making. a welcome addition to the Club's equipment.
Mrs. Dunbar gave three, lamps at the time the, Club took up new quarters in the Gloucester Build- Ing. She incidentally was respon- sible for much of the decorating of the new rooms.

This pleasure becomes wholly Absorbing to the inexperienced women, who, before epming to Hong Kong, were possibly mere .onlookers. Some remain over- whelmed and aimless, but others, consciously or unconsciously, dis cover the emptiness of this "Part pour art social game. They are perplexed and dissatisfied life of dressing, gossiping, bridge. playing, sucing shows and prepar inx tens. Such a woman feels her uselessness in the meskure of her intelligence; but she is often at a lox as to how she should reorganise her time. How is she to use her leisure as an individual and as a citizen.
Perhaps she is a young woman who has not found time to con- tinue her studies and intellectual interests since marriage. Now she will be free to use her time effectively. And even the older woman could find the means to. re-educate herself. She may take up past interests again, or she may wish to extend her range- probably, in the direction of some. selence dealing with human life, an education, economies, or child. psychology. There are the lighter interests the Victorians would call "hob- bies," and they might well, be- come an absorbing pleasure if they merged into the realm of the arts or the sciences. Indeed, once the mind is freed from the petty household duties and that desire to play some tfifling role, a keen intellectual curiosity could open up fascinating new worlds.
Then what opportunities offer themselves to the Hong Kong woman in the realm of social affairs? Beyond improving. her- self, how can she satisfy her desire to be useful and effective in the community?
*
Beyond an ability to look decora- tive there is surely much to be done here in the various Club works, charitable organisations, girl guiding, child education and aid, and much, too, for the animal-lover to do. There is ap- parently room yet for investiga- tion in many spheres. And as the motive of 'service has become the dominant social motive let us consider these problems.

Many women here, who only too anxious to contribute to the social welfare and use their leisure well, do not know of the existence of organisations that do their work quietly. I would therefore be most grateful if Hong Kong women' would write to me with ideas and suggestions and information, so that we could. discuss them on this page,

Members of such clubs were depicted in the humorous papers as brusque, mannish individuals, who lolled about reading dubinus novels, A high-ball at their elbows, while husbands went neglected, and ill-kempt children ended up in the juvenile courts.

Officers and Committee Ever since she declared the Club open, Lady Southorn has re- mained a loyal friend and sponsor of the organisation. She drops in from time to time, and knows`, a surprisingly large number of members by namo. "Only last week she came in with Sir Thomas for tea..

Miss Gill and Miss Hamilton are also helpers.
The chance visitor to the Club cannot help noticing the great masses of flowers which adorn both tea room and lounge. These, as the members know, are sent by Mr. Hoare from her arten- sive gardens at the Cosmopolitan Docks. Mrs. Hayward comes in regularly to take care of the flowers, and to add to them if more are needed. .
