Succour For Barnabas
(Continued from Page. 10)
and happiness, the nights too being marred by ugly dreams. We could not explain very clearly why we were so saddened. It was almost as if here was cause given us to see dimply and fear the end of our own small and merry kingdom, so secure

The love of our parenta gone, wo might even be driven so. That was the way the eldest among us reason- ed, but 1 myself was far. from such! moral logic. I was simply hurt by Burnabas's plight and wanted the hurt romoved. If We never saw Barnabas' again the hurt would go just the same, whlio be suffered before our eyes we suffered too, curiously, for we often, treated living things ourselves without a pang.
But then there was à cerlaln în-|- nocence about our eruelty, a kind of testing of stresses, a searching and reaching towards other kinds of life with a wish to identify all life with our own. One word from a fly in our own language and we should never have killed another. But s it was we killed and felt that they were withholding recognition of our godliness. Just as Bornabas was.
But we never saw it that way. We expected wisdom of age; Jenner should have known better. Watch ing, we were crippled, hurt in a new way. This was something different, a locked box within our knowledge, oddly tormenting. We thought of begging my father to intercede, or Johnny Lord, but could not bear the possibility that either of them should fall with Jenner.. We must act by ourselves. Barnabas must bei succoured, but how?
day, spiteful in our Day after helplessness, we met among the rests of the beech tree, scrapingly enlarging, our own special enves, outlining crazy schemes. Bøpe died and red again. We even thought of taking Jenner prismaër, matching cruelly with cruelty, Bet nil our. sehoming was wasted, for the final action of Cousin Mary one morning was quite simple and unpremeditat- cd.

Courageous in ber anger, she crept through the hedge to the float, snatched the whip-stick and came running breathlessly back, Solved!. Barnains was succnsired!
Gleefully we broke the ́stiëk into tiny pleros, hiding them in, our pockets, waiting for Jenner's re-) turn, expecting, I know not what.") A great pride and, exullation was in us ali The sunshine-was' brighter, muré splendid, and the birds were singing with us in absolute' har mony.
Acutely we heard, Jenner clump- ing buck along the path. In our triumph he seemed less big and for. bidding, more shabby and stumbl. ing, a demon' dethroned. The cream eans winked together in the sun-1 light as with a foreknowledge of what was to come.
Sluggishly he lifted the cans into -the flout, stepping up beside them, reaching for whip and rein, His hand groped along the tarnished rail. He stared and swore to find the whip-stick gone, looking Inside and outside the float for it, glaring up and down the lane, finally, blam- ing the innocent mulo..
From his pocket. he pulled ap ugly knife and chopped from the hedge a stick fully five times as thick us the old rod, trimming it viciously. Stamping aboard, he beat nightily with the new rod, cursing passionately, Shocked and stung, poor Barnabas reared bit! and corkscrewed into a gallop.
We stared foolishly tearfully at each other emptying the bits-of stick from our pockets, disconsolate, disillusioned. There was no Justice or rightness any more. By our in-* terference we had simply added to Barnabas's already intolerable bur don. Where was God that He per- mitted such sa reversal of good Intention?!
For us all, the world was out of balance and the surface sweetness of summera hideous mockery. Afflicted we wandered scarred weakened, savouring, food
