Paris calling
S it the Spring that brings the clothes, or the clothes that bring the Spring? There is certainly a lilt about the local shop-windows, that makes you want to smile. The clothes are gay and the lines just right for Spring. Some of the hats are no more than a brim and a bird, and dresses are slit at the hem.
and big. bright buttons, curled feathers, and crisp neck-lines!
Visiting one of the shops yester- day morning I saw a particularly lovely evening dress with that clever individual air that made it a model-not just a dress. A heavy silk crepe with a long panel fal! from the waist: diamante straps were striking above the deep bishop purple.
same
Then I saw the new vogue for -lace-the evening frock with the train, subtly suggesting something of long ago. This was a simple grace with just one touch of daring in the green velvet flower that clung to the beige lace at the waist.
There was an afternoon frock- with a nigger brown bodlice gather- ed with a broad band at the waist, drawing attention to its smart sim- plicity; the skirt and elbow-length -sleeves were beige of the
material. Another was powder blue silk crepe with touches of deep blue velvet-a lovely combination.- Its long square neck was effective, and a small pleated frill rested lightly on the shoulder. The fall was elegantly long with only-a slight slit at the hem. The jacket to match was smart too with a deep velvet collar. and litle buttons above winged points. Imagine those two together over egg-shelb china and light conversation!
A navy linen jacket and belt above a white linen skirt made me long for real Spring mornings. Nayy blue is the favourite colour *this Spring-but the real chic came
with two scarlet yarn pom-poms at. the neck and at the belt! - There: was youth and life in that- delight- ful little creation.
Little red feathers, beige belts and light coloured accessories are favourites. And, for evenings the colours are pink, duck-egg green. primrose yellow, and shades ' of light blue.
I saw some hats too. A bright vermillion straw with just the

HOW TOO
do things
ERE is something clever:
HER
and original for your sup- per table a bowl of: anemo- nies, vivid blossoms tucked in damp fern or moss.. Or a lily pond in a black glass bowl, with the flowers floating among real leaves.
This is the simple way of them. Have you some ends left over from your decorative coloured candles? Well, spread a newspaper on the table and then collect the materials.
You'll need a small saucepan, a bowl of cold water, a dessert spoon, several candle ends (or whole candles if you have them to spare) -the colours you like best, and a tube of black water-colour paint. Finish making the flowers of one. colour, and clean the pan before: using another.
First, melt the wax in the pan over a fire or on the gas-ring. Then take a spoonful of wax and pour it gently into the water, where it sets into a roundish disc -easily shaped into a petal. Leave the wax in the water for about ten seconds, putting your -fingers gently underneath to test when it is slightly hardened, then lift it out and shape into a petal. Reheat the wax and make another petal, joining it to the first at the base as you shape it. For the anemone make five. There is no need to hurry, as the wax will stay soft and is workable for several minutes. See that, the petals are dry as possible before painting the centre black. Make a few buds, too, with curled petals in a sheath of.green.
•
Let the wax set hard before arranging the flowers; if they are anemones they would look well in their moss bed in a simple brown earthernware bowl.
