is like for a very young child, just because it is so different from our own. But by listen- ing patiently to the talk of even. little children, and watching them, with the one purpose of understanding them, we can erter into their thoughts and see their pictures.

With the infant, though, we have not even the help of halting speech. It needs a far closer study and a keener leap of the imagination. But because the babe is dumb we cannot assume it has no mind.

The youngest baby responds to the touch of the mother's breast and arms long before he has learn- ed to see them. The most real

things in those days are the things which can be touched, and the child has to learn slowly that a particular appearance goes along with a certain sort of touch. Even at a year and a half a child may try to take up a sunbeam off the floor.

Hearing is the least developing of the senses at birth; but between the second and fourth months, most children become very sensi- tive to different tones of voice, and may be profoundly affected by them. It may make a great dif- ference to -his nervous health whether he is surrounded by soft encouraging voices and quiet steps, or harsh and shrill tones.;

His skill in movements soon gives him much delight and in- terest-see the two-months baby kicking in his bath; the "nine- months coping, and gurgling as he makes sound experiments,

It is through these experiences that the baby's mind grows.

BEAUTY DIARY

E would do well to begin our Diary in the even- ing in the morning a woman can be well-groomed and neat, in the afternoon soignee, but in the evening she must bloom. Her hair must shine, her eyes sparkle and her shoulders gleam.,

So much more can be done in the evening than in the day.... A stronger make-up is definitely be

coming; rouge may be a tint brighter, the lips more vivid, and eyeshadow deeper.

Do You Use Your Eyes?

Do they sparkle and look twice as big as they really are? Eye. make-up, is the most difficult of all to apply; but after a little private practice it's fun to do, because nothing improves one's looks more than beautiful eyes.

We must first pay attention to the eye-brows, since brows too thick and close so easily, over- shadow the eyes and take away from their size and colour. A thin, hard line is to be avoided; the curve of the eye-brows must be their own, but it should be a neat. tidy curve. like a young moon, with no strag- gling, untidy hairs. Don't be too eager when you pluck; grasp one hair firmly in the tweezers and pull gently at first. Then, when you feel the hair move, pull sharply, and out it will come, root and all. Dab afterwards with peroxide, and if you rub the skin with a menthol cone before starting to pluck you will not feel any discomfort.

A little mascara tints them darker if necessary; but brush the hairs the wrong way, so that the skin underneath is.not marked, then stroke them into shape with a dry, clean brush or your finger.

Do Your Eyes Sparkle? Some Subtle Ways of Evening Make-up

Eyebrows that are already dark enough should be brushed with the tiniest amount of brilliantine. Eye-Shadow

And what entrancing things this will do for your eyes! A subtle way of throwing light into the eyes is to, use a shadow shot with gold or silver: gold for the brunette and silver for the blonde. These can be had in a variety of shades, a lovely ons tod, especially for fair women, is mauve. It should be applied with a camel hair brush. Begin near the lashes very, very lightly; and shade gradually away over the lid until no edge is left. The dark- est part should be near the lashes, and then fading away foward the brows.

Lashes

They can be made beautifully silky with mascara. Take a little. on your brush, and brush the lashes upward and the ones at the outer edge outward. If the lashes stick together a little comb can be used to make each lash stand on its own legs. A navy-blue is often more. attractive for the evening: than a black.

A final touch of eye make-up, to make the evening eyes look larger, is to put the smallest dot of rouge on an orange-stick and place it in the inner corner of the eye. Evening Powder

Must be so carefully chosen! Artificial light requires something glowing like peach or rose tones, rather than the fawny shades.

• Much the same applies to the entire make-up; the pinky shades - give" more life and radiance than the orange.

One of the few times when a more' orangy make-up is attractive for evening is when wearing white,.in which case a darkish powder would' help to give a slightly sun-tan effect.

The colour must be softly toned down to barmonise, with shaded lights and subtle perfumes.
