DEADLIEST SNAKE OF AFRICA
The Black Namba
“SHADOW OF DEATH” NATIVES CALL IT
To see a mamba, the most · dan- gerous snake of South Africa, skim ming over the tops of low bushes) and matted grase suggests the flight of a dark arrow. "Makopa”
is the native name of this dreaded i reptile, and also "Muriti· woo lean":
The Shadow of Death." For speed and beauty of movement"that{ twelve feet of sinuous slatiness would be hard to beat. As you see it streaking through the bush its holly seems to scintillate with every shade of gleaming purple, shot with) green and gold." Colour is" decep- tive when seen on the move, which was possibly the reason for the Budden decease of a Boer farmer who tried to capture one of these reptiles.
Deadly Bite
He discovered a mamba in his living-room. It had entered via the verandah and an open door. Sud- denly confronted with it, he did not lose his presence of mind. Leaving the door wide open to facilitate his retreat, the young man advanced on the reptile ́with the only weapon a hand-a butter- fly net on a long pole. The snake was too agile. Like most creatures of the wild, when cornered and in deadly fear of their lives, it made; a mad dash for liberty. In pass- ing, it bit him only once, but that was sufficient. In the space of an hour he, was dead.
