FINDS AT COLCHESTER
7
An exhibition illustrating the discoveries made by the Col- chester Excavation Committee since 1980, was opened. last month in the Prehistoric Gallery of the British Museum⠀⠀
The period covered represents the reign of Cunobelinus (Shake- speare's Cymbeline) at the very beginning of the Christian era. and the first years of the Roman conquest under the Emperor Claudius (48-A.D.).
Photographs and plans show the first excavations made upon the huge, Lexden dykes which defended Cymbeline's capital,| and there are representative coins both of Cymbeline: and of
the Romans, discovered in the course of digging at Colchester; and at Sheepen Farm:
Iron bill-hooks, spades, swords, and a dagger represent the in- vaders, together with military belt-buckles and helmet-trap-
pings; while the native Celtic art is shown in a linch-pin decorated with dog, fox, and dolphin heads. A bronze saucepan brought by the Romans has the name of its maker, P. Cipius. Polybius, stamped on it, and there is a huge bronze cauldron.
