NO "MANELESS" LIONS

The Zoo was presented last May with a young specimen of the Indian lion, which has become so rare that it is now found only in a small area in the south and south-west The lions in this district are commonly described aa "maneleas," and the arrival of the Zoo animal was responsible for some discussion as to whether there really was a maneless species. Sultan, as he is called, has settled the argument, for he has begun to grow a most prolific mane, which gives promise of being fit to rival that of any African lion..

Caged lions invariably have better manes than their free re- lativea. In the course of fights and hunts for food, the mane is liable to become ragged: Even a caged lion's mane may become tangled if he goes out of doors in all weathers, and more than one Zoo specimen has to have his mane groomed.

One tame lion has his hair brushed every morning, while another allowe his keeper to trim his mane ith scissors and comb.
