After five years the final hearing of the famous rum-runner "I'm Alone" opened before the Commis sioners.

The case has repeatedly crop- ped in the American courts sincé March, 1929, when an American coastguard cutter sank the "I'm Alone" with her cargo of 2,800 chses of rum, and whisky off the Louisiana coast. Canada claims £77.560 damages for the loss of the vessel.

Prospects of a resumption of the naval talks are growing very dim. The Americans, who are sailing homeward to-day, have given: a'definite understanding that they do not expect to return either for further conversations or a naval con- ference unless there is a radical change in the Japanese view which would give a more hopeful basis for future discussions.

The Americans are leaving with the impression that the Jap- anese view is unchanged. Whether any change is possible depends on the outcome of future Anglo-Japanese negotiations through diplomatic channels.
