Washington, To-day.

After five years the final hearing of the famous rum-runner "I'm Alone" opened before the Commis sioners.

The case has repeatedly crop- ped in the American courts sincé March, 1929, when an American coastguard cutter sank the "I'm Alone" with her cargo of 2,800 chses of rum, and whisky off the Louisiana coast. Canada claims £77.560 damages for the loss of the vessel.

MUST BE RADICAL CHANGE IN JAPANESE VIEWS FUTURE DEPENDS ON BRITAIN

London, To-day,

Prospects of a resumption of the naval talks are growing very dim. The Americans, who are sailing homeward to-day, have given: a'definite understanding that they do not expect to return either for further conversations or a naval con- ference unless there is a radical change in the Japanese view which would give a more hopeful basis for future discussions.

The Americans are leaving with the impression that the Jap- anese view is unchanged. Whether any change is possible depends on the outcome of future Anglo-Japanese negotiations through diplomatic channels.

YUET ON OWNERS' ACTION

MAIN CAUSE FOR ANXIETY

Considerable progress has been made this morning in connection with the local shipping dispute, and the atmosphere is now consi- dered to be a

great deal more friendly....

There is a definite hope that the strike, arranged for midnight, may

be averted.

The only fly in the ointment at the moment is the action of the cwners of the Yuet On, who have dismissed all their officers on the the receipt of their notices of sus pension should the demands of the Guild not be met. It is be lieved that. Russians have been employed to fill the vacancies.

The China Coast Officers' Gulld, however, have made the stipulation that these officers must be reinstated and must not be liable to any penalties. This practically places the onus of the settle ment of the dispute on the owners of the Yuet On
