ENGLAND'S CROP
OF TOBACCO
Harvest Begun On The Only Farm
OWNER'S PLEA FOR PROTECTION
The tobacco harvest is now be- ling gathered on the only commer- ¡cial tobacco farm in England. It] is owned by Mr. A. J. Brandon, of Church Crookham, Hampshire, al pioneer who has grown more than thirty varieties of tobacco.
In spite of this experience, it is still doubtful which is the most; suitable type for English solls and {climate.
This year Mr. Brandon has de- voted six acres to the crop, and an output of 600lb. to 7001b. an acre is expected. But it is grown at a loss. He believes that tobacco. growing in Britain has been killed by Government action.
The fact that in 1659 tobacco growing was a flourishing industry in 31 English counties shows that] a good deal of land is suited to the) crop.
Home-grown tobacco now pays the same rate of duty as Empire tobacco. Blenders who had been willing to take English tobacco for blending with American supplies now use Empire tobacco because it le cheaper.
A
Taste For Virginia
Government Committee on tobacco-growing in England reach- ed the conclusion, in 1923.' that only tobacco of low grade can be grown generally in Great Britain; but Mr. Brandon maintains that the British palate has become too accustomed to the flavour of American tobaccos. DI
The crop can be grown in Eng- land on the lightest soil which.. under ordinary conditions, will not| repay the cost of eultivation.

Dr. Albert C. Bernie
The announcement, later denied, that Mr. Andrew W. Mellon, former Secretary of the Treasury, paid Soviet Russie authorities $1,500,000 for the Raphael "Alba Madonna" recalls that America entire houses some of the finest private art collections in the world.
At the turn of the century, America's capitalista sent a golden flood to Europe in exchange for whole cargos of old mas- lers. Joseph E. Widener, Belmont race track czar, possesses," "at- cording eminent critics, the most harmonious private art colles- tion in America, worth many millions. A Philadelphia, suburb neighbour, Dr. Albert C. Barnes, has the second largest collection of modern paintings in the world. With the death of the elder 3. P. Morgan, the internationally famous collection of canvasses was dispersed. Most of the Morgan treasures now consist of priceless books manuscripts in the famous Morgan library,
