· MAYOR ARRESTED FOR BURGLARY
Ideal Citizen's Lapse. After 17 Years.
CAUGHT BURYING BOOTY
Belgrade. Janjo Koratch, 65-year-old Mayor of Gornjoselski, in Yugo- slavia. was the Ideal Citizen.
For 17 years he held the post
of Major. He was also the chief district magistrate.
His honesty was a byword. His record of public service was one of which any man might be proud.
Koratch was a wealthy man, too. Before the war he lived in America, where he made a small fortune.
For many years the 'police of Gornjoselski had been baffled by
a series of burglaries which seem- ed to be the work of the same hand.
But they had no clue to the burglar's identity,
A few nights ago à police pat- rol was passing through a field when they came upon a party of men digging a trench.
With the voice of authority one of the men told them to go away. It was the Mayor."
And the police were on the point of obeying him when one of them happened to look in the trench. He saw a number of large packing cases.
When the cases were opened they were found to contain the proceeds of various burglaries over a period of 17 years.
Koratch and the other men' were arrested.-Reuter.
