Miss Pearl Buck's Translation.
A FASCINATING BOOK
Miss Pearl 8. Buck undertook a tremendous task when she set about translating "All" Men are Brothers" from the original Chin- ese: The book runs to nearly 1,800 large pages, and one may imagine the labour that went to produce them. It was labour not wasted, for the result is a fascinating book. The story, with its immense plot,
characters involving 36
and aeventy-two minor ènes, is set in the thirteenth century, when the internal affairs of China were in a bad way and men were being com- pelled to flee from unjust officials for the oppression of the Govern
ment (Miss Buck tells us in her in- troduction). Many of them took refuge on a great mountain In the middle of a lake in the 'Shantung] province, where they formed them- selves into a compact group of polite robbers, and it is with the adventures of these men, before,
after and during their flight, that the story deals.
It is necessarily, therefore some- what episodic, and the translator advises us not to read solidly through the book, but to jump The New Territories Agricul- about it as we will, interesting our tural Show is to be opened at 2.30 selves first in this man and then in New to-morrow afternoon at Shek Wu that.
