Cable Ship Rescues A British Crew.
Kingston (Jamaica), The captain of the wrecked Bri- tish steamer Newbrough, and the thirty members of the crew, were rescued after several hours of gallant work by the British cable ship, Norseman.
The Newbrough struck a reef on January 21 near Morant Cay, sixty miles from Kingston, and sent out an S O S for help. Her engine- room was badly flooded.
Heavy setta pounded over the reefs and against the sides of the man after helpless Newbrough as man of her crew was transferred to the Norseman with the aid of a breeches bouy.
The captain of the Newbrough' was the last man to leave the wreck- led ship.
The Norseman proceeded at once to Kingston and landed the New- brough's captain and crew.
It was on Christmas Eve that. an S O S was flashed out by the Newbrough asking that any ship in her vicinty should proceed at once to her assistance (says a B.U.P. Her engine-room was message), awash with water, and her situation: acemed threatening.
Then came. a wireless
message that the American liner President McKinley 'was standing by.
It was the cable ship Norseman, however, that eventually effected the
rescue.
The Newbrough is owned by the Northumbrian Shipping Company, Ltd. (Messrs. Common Brothers, of Newcastle, managers). It is Impos- sible to say
whether she can be or not.

poems gave him the position of something very like the national poet.
Punch's Formula.
On the whole, Punch's formula seems a staid and sober one for a twentieth-century humorous journal. There is little that is snappy in it, On the contrary, there are some- times long explanatory paragraphs under one or both of the two big! cartoons in each week's issue. There la etill a mid-Victorian leisureliness about Punch. Yet it has produced some of the most famous jokes In modern humour.
There was the one about the Aber- donian who had been on a visit to London and when asked why he had come home so soon, replied "E-eb, it's just a ruinous place, that!! Mun, a had na been therre abune! twa hoours when-Bang-went sax- pence!"
And the railway porter's reply to the old lady who was travelling with a menagerie of pets is almost as famous: "Stationmaster say, Mum, as cats is 'doga," and rabbits is 'dogs,' and ao's parrots, but this here tortis is an insect, so there! ain't no charge for it.".
