LORD BEATTY SEEKS TO SAVE TRADE.
Pleads For Life Of Coastal Shipping.
LIVELIHOOD OF THOUSANDS.
Admiral of the Fleet Lord Beatty has sent the following letter to the
Press —
•
It would be deplorable if the prominence that is being given to the rivalries. of road and rail were to obscure the claims or aggravate the difficulties of the third wing of our national transport · system- port-to-port traffic by sea.
Great Britain is an island. It has more porta for its size than any other industrial country. Its. history is maritime. Its pioneer carrier, whether for men or for goods, was the sea. Ita industrial development, no less than its growth as the foremost sea Power of the world, alike sprang from those maritime porta and the splendid seafaring race that they produced. These ports and men Fare still
one of the nation's greatest assets, whether for indus- try and peace or for the grimmer needs of war. Are they to be over- looked, or indeed scrapped, in this scramble to rationalize to the last halfpenny?

This question, I suggest, is one for a public concern comparable with that shown on the road v. rail |question, and possibly if our port authorities, chambers of shipping, and others concerned in this mat-Tairai Maru, Japanese str., 2,659 ter had been allowed to give
Capt. H. Go, from Tsukuni, evidence at the recent Government buoy No. B29.—M.B. K. inquiry a more complete conspec- tus of our inland transport. pro-i blems would have been manifeat] in the report. It would seem odd if water carriage, which wears out no roads or rails, wheels or tires, were really dearer or less suitable for many classes of traffic than land-borne transport.
National Viewpoint. But whatever the ultimate find- ings of the cost accountant, there is still the national viewpoint-the importance of maintaining our ac- cessibility In" every part and in all seasons, whether of peace or war; of maintaining our, sea rozda as well as our land roada; and, above all', 'mäintsining our seafaring and water-population, which is the very core of us as a nation and which 5th Nov.is now dreadfully hard hit. These, I suggest, are vital things.

Seeing our ships in their thou- sands, our sailors in their tens of thousands, giving way day after day under the crush of economic events and going into unemploy- ment is to me one of the most,pa-i thetic facts of our time. The out- side World events that have caused 8th Nov. this tendency may be beyond con- trol. But that we should, aggra- 9th Nov.
