· Adventures Of Sailing Vessel.
TRADING PRIVILEGES.
The September issue of the Blue Peter recalis the story of a plea- [sure cruise' in 1884 by the sailing jship Tyburnia, under the command of Captain Kennaley. Chartered by the Pleasure Sailing Yacht Company. the idea was that "peo ple of rank and fashion" should be accommodated at the rate of guinen a day for voyages to various parts of the world, including the South Sens, the passengers having liberty to indulge in private crading with the "savages" at ports of call
B
The account shows that the ship duly set out on her first cruise with packages in her hold containing knives, mirrors, and similar goods.
a strange cargo; as, The Times re-b marked, to take to the West Indies, whither she was bound. The "yacht" arrived at Madeira, where a dispute with the Customs authori- ities went to such lengths that Cap- tain Kennaler was informed by the Military Governor that his ship was under arrest and would be fired upon should she attempt to leave! her moorings. Captain Kennaley. who had successfully fun the American blockade 13 times, laugh- ed at the threat and next morning) made sail, whereupon the fort com- menced firing at the ship with ball. Captain Kennaley derisively dis- charged two blank cartridges by" way of farewell and set à course for Barbados. This adventure, as the; author writes was the beginning of a stormy trip, on which much quar- ralling occurred among the pas- sengers and reached such a pitche that horse whips were brought into (play.
mun,
At Trinidad the captain cume to loggerheads with the chief lighter- of the port. By this time. it is recalled all hope of swapping Špenknives for savage weapons had been abandoned and the ship was prosaically taking in a cargo of sugar for New York, at which port her arrest under suspicion of being
a smuggler brought the pleasure cruise to an end, and the passeng ers made their way home by liner to England.
