Cheapest Known.
حسب".
No mora striking evidence of the present position is the shipping
industry throughout the warld could be found than existing values of new and second-hand vessels. Statistics show that they are lower than at any other perlod In the history of the industry.
Figures compiled over the 32 years and published in "Fairplay" in July 7, reveal that, in 1904, a new, ready 7,500-bon"cargo stöamer could be purchased for £18,000. In 1912 the same type of vessel cost £57,500 In 1917 the price| varied from $187,000 to $168,000. In March, 1920, -iha vessel' would have cost $258,750. By December, 1920, the value of the vessel was $105,000. This steep fall in prices. continued, and by December, 1981, the value had receded to £37,000. In June of this year the value was calculated by "Fairplay" ati £32,000, or £7,000 less than the value ruling in 1904,
"Fairplay" points out that the figures quoted refer to the value of a steamer purchased afloat, and reveal that the cost of building a ship has no relation to her value- when completed. In 1921 a. cargo steamer of 7,500 tons, on very plain specifications, cost $135,000 to build... In June" of this year a vessel of the same size, and bullt

to the same specifications, woulded have cost £68,000, or nearly twice as much as the market value of the vessel. afoat.
Values of second-hand vessels are also very low. Many British ship- owners now prefer to dispose of their older ships to shipbreakers, rather than to sell them to foreign run competitors or continue to them uneconomically. For this reason sales for demolition haye been numerous this year, but values have been low. In support of of its assertion that values second-hand vessels for service have also reached R low level. "Fairplay" mentions a number of cases where quoted prices have fallen as much as 60 per cent. In five months.IN
