SHIP COSTING £6,000

PER FOOT.

Luxury Liner May Never See Sea.

Known as "the ship that is cost- ing £6,000 foot," the French super-liner T6, is making fairly rapid progress at the "St. Nazaire shipyard. This vessel is practical- ly identical in size with “the 72,000-ton Cunarder which has been lying idle on the stocks at Clydebank since work was JUR- pended last December,

THE CHIN MATE

The motives which prompted the Cie. Generale Transatlantique to |embark on the construction of their giant ship are far from com- prehensible, for her design is such as would appear to render any pro- fitable working of the vessel · im- possible even under normal econo- mie conditions. Her passenger ace commodation represents the last word in luxury, for space has been ruthlessly sacrificed to give the in- dividual voyager a quite abnormal amount of room."

It is understood that her total; passenger capacity is extraordin arily limited in proportion to her size. In this case fares would ap-|· parently be correspondingly high,

"Blue Riband" Hope.

British shipping experts are satisfied that the new French lin- er cannot possibly pay her way even under the most favourable conditions. Her first cost is es timated at 770 million francs, while the fuel bill for driving her! at 30 knots from Havre to New York will ba enormous. The length is stated to be 1,020 feet and the breadth 117 feet, "outsize" dimensions which must complicate still further the berthing and deck. ing process on both sides of the i Atlantic...
