U.S. PARTY POLITICS,

No Cancellation Of War Debts

Is Second Plank.

Chicago.. To-day.

A sensation has been crent. ed by the Democratic Con- vention Platform Committee, which by 35 votes to 18 adopted a straight prohibi. tion repeal plank,

The decision was unexpect ed, as it was supposed that the Committee, which is con- trolled by Mr. Franklin Roosevelt, who is the favour- ite for nomination, was plan- ning to avoid definitely com mitting the Party to repeal.

The second plank adopted by the Committee is a de- elaration against the cancella- tion of war debts, which was not unexpected as any other. policy would un- doubtedly injure the Party's prospecly in the Middle West. Reuter.

YOUNG FRENCH PAIR ELIMINATED JAPANESE PLAYERS.

Wimbledon, Yesterday,

G. P. Hughes and Fred Perry to-day scored a triumph when they defeated Sidney Wood and Gregory Mangin, the American pair, in the Quarter-Finals of the Men's Double, Championship. By winning in straight sets over last year's Singles Cmplon and the -American Indoor Champion, the British pair have given cause for the optimism which is prevailing at the moment.

"Wilmur Allison and John Van Ryn, the holders, were given a hard fight by R. Menzel and J. S. Cliff before they entered the semi- finals.

Christian Boussus and Andre Merlin, two French players of exceptional promise displayed magnificent form to eliminate R. Miki and Jiro Satoh, the Conquerors of Crawford and Hopman, and now are the sole representatives of France at Wimbledon.

In the Semi-Final Round of the Women's Singles, Miss Helen Jacobs made an All-American Final a certainty when she defeated Mme. Mathieu in straight sets. The French champion, who is slow on her feet, was completely overwhelmed by the speed of the Ameri- can girl. It is more than probable that Helen Jacobs will meet Mrs. Wills-Moody in Friday's Final.
