Yesterday's Freight Figure.

The Harbour Office Reports for the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yeater- day gave a free movement of ves- sels with a high tonnage. Freights were up to the mark, both the in- wards and throughs reaching five figures. The total tonnage entered was 40,750.

There were 16 inward registries, and of which eight were British seven of four Agures, while of the 11 throughs, seven were British and six of four figures. One vessel ar. rived in ballest.

Passengers entered during the period included 110 Europeans and 2,287 Asiatic deck, British vessels carrying 2,158 out of the total in ali classes.

Having completed over 33 years service as a marine, engineer sailing out of Shanghai under the house Hag of the Indo-China Steam Navi- gation Company, Mr. T. McCreath, long a familiar figure in every China coast and river port, has been granted his retirement by the cor- returned to his poration and has home in Scotland,.

As with many other engineers! directing the engine room opera- tions on China coastal ships, Mr. McCreath started his maritime career as an apprentice with the Clyde Engine Works at Glasgow on June 18, 1888. On completion of

In 1899, however, the lure of Shanghal attracted the young en- gineer and leaving the Japanese service, he journeyed. to this city where he joined the engineering staff of the Indo-China Steam Navi- gation Company. Since that time, in the Intervening 33 years, Mr. MeCreath has served aboard a score of different vessels, flying, the "Jar- dine, Matheson house flag, and hasj risen from a junior rating to the highest, engine room rank. From Hankow on the Yangtze River to Foochow on the coast, Mr. McCreath 14th June has won friends among the mari-

When he and Mrs. McCreath left Shanghai several days ago aboard the C.P.B. liner Empress of Asia for Scotland, via Canada, a crowd of old friends accompanied the couple to the Jetty to bid them fare- 6th June well.
