It seemed strange to Belesis that Sardanapalus should eat, drink, per- fume himself, paint his face, and spin the most exquisite wool for his amusement, while the enemy was at his very gates. And, because he had a star, a birthmark, on his neck, an the Assyrians worshipped str.

We are not going to tell you we are made from the hides of animals, because you can see for yourself that a cow can lie on wet grass and her skin protects her from the damp. And this same skin, when tanned to leather, keeps your feet dry. But we'll tell you why shoes are the symbols of luck.

Shoes were symbols of all sorts of things. Long, ago, people took them off their feel as a mark of respect when entering a house, just as boys take off their hats to-day. They also gave shoes to sign bar- gains. In the days when a bride was bought by her husband, the girl's father gave the bridegroom & shoe to show that he had no more authority over his daughter, and gave his rights to the bridegroom. Shoes have always been mixed up with weddings.

WENDY'S LITTLE MILLINERS.

A Fashionable Cap From An Old Hat,

This week, Children, we're going to show you how to make a pretty little cap out of an old felt hat, or some soft woollen material if you haven't a suitable hat.

If you

use an old hat, cut the brim away from the crown, and then cut right through the brim so that you have a long trip of felt. Place this round your head, and cut nway any extra felt; the strip must

just reach to the lobes of your ears, and it should be about five or six inches wide. You can stretch the felt a little, if it is 'too narrow, but go very carefully so that you don't pull it into holes,

Now, from the crown of the hat cut a rather long semi-circle for the back of your cap. Diagram A | and B show you the shapes of the head-strip and the back, and you, can experiment in paper first to be sure of getting a good At.

With some bright-coloured wool work an edging of buttonhole stitch- ing all round the curve of the semi- circle, and along the inside edge of the strip; then join the back and the strip by putting the two button- holed edges together and sewing them with the same wool. Diagram A shows you what the back of the cap will look like when you have done this.

Now work a band of coloured wool flowers right across the back edge of the cap, bringing them up each side of the front strip, as indicated in the sketch. Diagram D shows you the stitches to use.
