A well-known figure in Mincing Lane, he was one of the pioneers of both the Indian and the Ceylon tea industries, and one of the first who materially assisted the start of the rubber industry in the Far East. Throughout his life he was much interested in helping the distressed, and was one of the founders of the Great Ormond Street Hospital

One of the oldest members of the Conservative Club, he was also a keen Freemason. He married. In 1867 Elizabeth, second daughter of Mr. A. W. Gaddesden, D.L., of Ewell Castle, Surrey, and leaves one son and three daughters.
